Prepare for the Viking invasion! This wooden long ship is scaled for use with 28mm figures and can hold up to 22 of them mounted on standard bases. The ship measures 12 inches long and 2.5 inches wide. The standard ship comes with 20 plain round shields suitable for you own designs. Add on kits are available for alternate prow and stern designs as well as decorated shields. This is a beginners level model kit and some assembly is required.

The LDW viking longship is a lightweight, sturdy practical gaming piece even if it's a highly stylized rather than an historically accurate rendition. (The sides of the ship are blocked ridges rather than a smooth prow and the figureheads are flat, although convincing in profile.) It supposedly holds 20+ 28mm figures if they are on 20mm bases. Unfortunately, my figures were already based on 26mm warbases which meant I could fit about 12 in each ship. There is room for improvement here which is why I give the kit only 4 stars. Firstly, the provided instructions do not have clear profile-side photographs, and the assembly is not as simple as you'd think. You should do a dry run first, which is a bit fiddly. Secondly, the shields which come to be affixed to the side of the ship are much too big to be posed next to 28mm figures as they are easily 30% bigger than any current manufacturer's shields. I will be using blanks from the manufacturer of my figures and chucking the LDW shields. Lastly, two of the three ships I received had issues with pieces not being fully cut from the "sprue" which meant having to carve them out, which couldn't be done without minor damage to the pieces using Xacto tools, which is all I have. One final pointer: the application of wood stain greatly enhances the appearance of the ships! All in all, these ships are a good value for the money and will serve me well. I'd like to see some oars at some point too please!
